If the current polls are correct, the coming election heralds the destruction of innocent human life like none other. We appear to be on a path to elect a man who votes for destroying babies not just in the womb, but also those babies who, having survived an attempted abortion, are born alive. In his eyes these babies who are born alive should be left to die. Protecting the unborn is our biggest priority. No other issue, not the economy, not the war and not issues of poverty can touch the intrinsic evil that abortion is. As Father John Corapi tells us:
No other issue, not all other issues taken together, can constitute a proportionate reason for voting for candidates that intend to preserve and defend this holocaust of innocent human life that is abortion.
It is time to remember the story of Lepanto. On October 7, 1571, in a historic battle, radical Turkish Muslims stood poised to destroy Christian forces. Pope Pius V ordered public prayers. Rosaries were sent up to heaven. Victory was ultimately achieved and attributed to Our Lady and the Rosary. After this decisive battle was won at Lepanto, Pope Pius V did two things. First, he dedicated the first Sunday of October as the feast of the Holy Rosary. Second, he added “Help of Christians” to the Litany of Loreto. We should remember that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress” (Psalm 46).
We need to remember Lepanto. Our Blessed Mother loves each one of us. She loves each unborn baby. She is the “help of all Christians” and she is our help. Surely she will help us if only we will pray the Rosary as she asked. Through Mary, God can give us an elected official who can defend life, and “my soul rests in God alone, from whom comes my salvation” (Psalm 62:2).
Tens of millions of dollars have been slated for advertising. The world and all that is in it seems behind some messages. Truths have been twisted and people confused to such an extent that what is right now seems wrong and what’s wrong now seems right. But our Lady can see through this all. Earthly means may be failing, but Heaven is not. Heaven is on our side. Good can overcome the evil of abortion. God can bring our redemption. “With your arm you redeemed your people” (Psalm 77:3).
An e-mail was sent from Father John Corapi recently to those on his mailing list. He urged us to join him in a novena to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election day, November 4th:
I strongly urge every one of you to make a Novena and pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election Day, November 4th. Pray that God’s will be done and the most innocent and utterly vulnerable of our brothers and sisters will be protected from this barbaric and grossly sinful blight on society that is abortion. No woman, and no man, has the right to choose to murder an innocent human being.
It may seem that human means are failing. But God will never fail. God is always faithful. Prayer is our answer. I plan to join Father Corapi, as he petitions Our Lady through this novena. Won’t you join in this novena too?
