PICTURES FROM ASSISI

What can one say of Assisi? The home of St.Francis and St.Clare. It's very beautiful even though the two nights we spent there were cold and very windy. The manger scene is just before you get to the Basilica of St.Francis. This is where St.Francis and some of his brothers from the order are buried. Read the above link to find out more about it. It was very neat though I had been to Assisi for day trips I don't remember seeing this before. It so much nicer to take ones time to reflect and or course to check out all the neat gift shops. Did you know St.Francis is credited for the Nativity scene? We stayed in a convent and the rooms were very nice! It had the oldest church in Assisi. The nuns spoke no English so it's a good thing Fr.Ken speaks the language. We of course also saw the Basilica of St.Clare. The area if very hilly so we really got a work out walking the streets. We left on Sunday and stopped to have mass at St. Mary of the Angels. This is where the original Porzioncola is and the spot where St.Francis actually died. There is also a rose garden that has no thorns. The tradition is that the rose bushes lost their thorns after St.Francis threw himself into them because of being tempted to abandon the ascetic life. I took a video tape of the garden. I'm so glad we stayed two night in Assisi and would have loved to even stay longer. The second night we had dinner with a bunch of college kids from the states who are third order Franciscans. We originally met four of the girls in the Chicago airport and they ended up in Milan with us as well! Then the next night when we were roaming the streets of Rome they were on the phone with one of their parents because they had lost their luggage as well. We informed them that most likely their luggage was at the airport (that morning we had gone to the airport and every one's luggage was there but mine). They were so excited and thanked us. Then we ran into them in Assisi and they called us their guardian angels and invited us over to where they were staying for dinner. It is such a small world and we exchanged emails. When you are in a foreign county it is music to your ears when you hear someone else speaking your language. I'll be glad when Glorie sends me a cd of the pictures she took because we have pictures of the girls on there. God Bless
