DOWN TOWN ST.JOHNS
My Uncle Dick sent me this picture it was in the online Newspaper. My grandpa is the first one
on the left. He was a respected business man. I meet people today who bought cars from him and only have good things to say about him.
A Look Back
Downtown St. Johns in 1964
by Barry Bauer
Left to right: Larry Burns – Egan’s Ford & Mercury, R. V. Gay – F. C. Mason Co., Earl Lancaster – Superintendent of St. Johns schools, Duane Wirick – teacher/coach, and Herb Oatley – local dentist
The group in this photo was made up of local businessmen and educators. The cars parked in downtown St. Johns indicates that this photo was taken in 1964. The car to their left (our right) was known as a 1964½ Mustang but actually there wasn’t a 1964½ Mustang. It was named that by car buyer enthusiast but it was really an early release of a 1965 Mustang.
There are no cars newer in the background.
A trip down memory lane gives us the names of some of the businesses operating at that time. From right to left: R. E. Benson’s Plumbing & Heating, Gambles, Hunt’s Drug store, Harr’s Jewelry, Julie Kay, St. Johns Furniture, DePeal’s Music Center, Boron’s Floor Coverings, Clinton National Bank and further down, Western Auto.
